Step-By-Step Graduation Guide

If you are planning to graduate this semester, the following steps are required to complete the graduation process:


Make sure you are registered for your final semester.


Make sure all degree requirements will be met.

  • Graduates: As a graduate student in the School Criminology and Criminal Justice, there are certain steps you need to take that ensure a successful, on-time graduation. Please review Graduation Deadlines and Procedures on the Graduate College's Web site. Review your plan of study degree requirements in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice Graduate Handbook with your faculty advisor or your graduate advisor to confirm that all requirements are met.

    • You must be defending a Thesis or Dissertation (M.S. and PhD)
    • You must have an approved iPOS. No pending changes or petitions (All grad)
    • You must have met all minimum 3.0 GPA requirements (iPOS and Graduate)
    • You must have an approved full committee on the iPOS (no pending changes)
    • All milestone requirements have been satisfied (for example, written comprehensive examination, foreign language examination, etc.)
    • Doctoral students must have reached candidacy
    • You must be an active student and currently enrolled


Apply to graduate online or in-person.

  • Deadline for fall graduates is October 15th
  • Deadline for spring graduates is March 31st
  • Deadline for summer graduates is July 1st.

Application for Graduation Filing Fees 

Students must file for graduation by the deadline in order to avoid paying a late fee and have their names printed in the Commencement and Convocation program.

- Graduate, $50 ($25 for each additional concurrent degree)

- Late fee, if applicable, $35


Applying for Graduation 

To apply for graduation online, log on to your MyASU account and click the "Apply to Graduate" link in the My Programs & Advising box. Please note that a credit card is required (see fees above). Follow the instructions on the screen.

To apply in-person, pay the graduation fee at the University Cashier's Office, located in the University Center Building (UCENT) on the first floor. Please note their hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm.

The graduation office will check your plan of study to make sure that you have completed the requirements for your degree.

Decide which graduation ceremonies you will attend and RSVP.



A cap, gown and tassel must be worn and can be purchased from the ASU Bookstore. Graduation supplies and announcements can also be purchased at the bookstore.

Tassel colors:
- Master of Science in Criminology and Criminal Justice: gold
- Master of Arts in Criminal Justice: white


Graduation Ceremonies

Graduates are invited to attend both University Commencement and the College of Public Programs Convocation. Information about these two ceremonies can be and additional ceremonies that students may be interested in and/or invited to attend can be found on the University Graduation Ceremonies Web site.


If you plan on attending commencement and/or convocation, please RSVP through your MyASU account after you have applied for graduation. The RSVP system will record each graduate's information, which will be used at ceremonies.



Graduates do not receive official diplomas at the graduation ceremonies - instead, they will receive a diploma case. Diplomas are mailed approximately 10-12 weeks after the degree conferral date. They are mailed to the home address on file with the University Registrar's Office. F1/J1 visa graduates will receive their diplomas at their local addresses.

Graduates with a delinquent financial obligation of $25 or more will not receive their diploma. For information on a delinquent account, please contact (480) 965-5220.
